Project: Marine Spatial Planning in India

Location: Chennai, Tamil Nadu (with fieldwork along coastal areas)

Duration: 1 year (with the possibility of extension)

Position Summary:

We are seeking a highly motivated Research Associate to contribute to broader work ongoing within

our research group on Blue Economy with a specific set of duties around Marine Spatial Planning in

India. This role is ideal for master’s students with strong analytical skills and a passion for marine

governance, sustainability, and coastal community engagement. The selected candidate will engage

in fieldwork, conduct data analysis, and contribute to developing research manuscripts and actionable

insights that support sustainable marine governance and spatial planning practices in India.

Key responsibilities:

  • Conduct fieldwork along the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu, engaging with local communities,
  • stakeholders, and institutions.
  • Design and implement surveys and interviews to gather data from diverse stakeholders,
  • including fishers, government officials, and industry representatives.
  • Perform statistical analysis and interpret data to identify trends and patterns relevant to
  • marine spatial planning and blue economy initiatives.
  • Assist in developing manuscripts and technical reports that contribute to academic
  • publications and policy recommendations.
  • Organize workshops, stakeholder meetings, and knowledge dissemination events to facilitate
  • dialogue and collaboration on marine governance.
  • Collaborate with team members and external partners to ensure the smooth execution of
  • project activities.
  • Contribute to proposal writing, literature reviews, and grant applications as needed.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Master’s degree (completed or in progress) in Marine or Environmental Science, Social Sciences, Economics, Public Policy, Development Studies, or related fields.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with experience in qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis.
  • Proficiency in statistical software (e.g., R, SPSS, Stata, or similar)
  • Willingness and ability to conduct extensive fieldwork along the Tamil Nadu coastline.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English; knowledge of Tamil is highly desirable.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Prior experience in marine governance, coastal community engagement, or sustainability projects is an advantage.
