Problem & Motivation:

High-moisture organic waste streams—such as municipal sewage sludge, septage, microalgae, and agricultural residues—require energy-intensive pre-drying, making conventional thermochemical techniques like pyrolysis economically unfeasible.

Technological Breakthrough & R&D:

The Thaiyur Discovery Campus pilot utilizes subcritical water conditions (high pressure and elevated temperature) to process wet biomass directly into high-energy density biocrude. Innovations include subcritical water co-liquefaction catalysts, continuous high-pressure bio-crude extraction reactors, and black liquor valorization processes.

Ecosystem & Field Deployment:

Deployed in collaboration with municipal corporations, Oil Marketing Companies (IOCL, HPCL), paper/pulp industries, and climate-tech firms like Sea6 Energy processing macroalgae biomass.

Tangible Impact Created:

Converts wet, untreated bio-waste directly into drop-in biocrude oil with calorific values exceeding 35 MJ/kg without costly pre-drying steps—diverting municipal waste from landfills while replacing fossil crude feedstocks in refining pathways.
