I2MP Energy Systems

Energy is a key factor in the growth of countries and their development. Yet, the world is now facing a need to re-assess its approach to derive energy due to effects that the large energy consumption is having on the environment.

Energy sources are multiple and involve different disciplines for its use and operation. The I2MP program aims to provide the student with the basic skill sets that spread across the multiple domains of energy, as its core content. Electives offer a way to specialize in certain aspects as well. The Project aims to provide the candidate with a working experience in their chosen field in an interdisciplinary manner. It is expected that the student after graduation would be capable of tackling the issues in this highly interdisciplinary field in industry or in academic research.

Interdisciplinary Dual Degree programme - Energy Systems

The Interdisciplinary Dual Degree programme in Robotics is proposed to nurture and
develop the next-generation professionals in the area of robotics who can contribute in the
design, development, and implementation of robotic systems in the industry and help the
industry to improve their productivity, leading to the overall economic growth of the country. IIT
Madras has faculty working in the area of robotics spread across various departments. Since no
single department has the critical mass to offer a dual degree program in Robotics, an
interdisciplinary dual degree program is proposed. The dual degree program in Robotics will be
having its focus on Design, Analysis, and Application development (new system development)
and the curriculum has been developed with this focus.

M.Tech Civil Engg

Since its inception in 1959, the Department of Civil Engineering has grown into a full-fledged department with nationally and internationally acclaimed academic programs. Specialising in Planning, Design, Construction and Management, the department strives to be a pioneer in the country for teaching, research and consultancy in existing and emerging areas of civil engineering.

M.Tech Electrical Engg

Power Systems & Power Electronics

One of the oldest departments in IIT Madras, Electrical Engineering department offers both B Tech and Dual Degree in Electrical Engineering. From the basics of resistors and battery circuits, the course structure goes into the development of microprocessors and huge electrical machines used in factories. With the advancement in IoT, the field of electrical engineering is an integral part of several other fields. Alumni from the department have not only joined major Tech giants like Samsung and Intel, but have also joined ISRO. Students have secured admissions into universities like Stanford, UCB, Harvard, Georgia Tech and University of Michigan. Students may also choose to specialise in Applied Mathematics, Mechatronics, Machine Learning and Computer Vision giving them versatility not available in most other courses.

M.Tech Ocean Engg

Offshore Technology - UoP

Originally conceived as the Ocean Engineering Centre (OEC) in 1977, the Department of Ocean Engineering (DOE) has since focused on offshore engineering, naval architecture, as well as research and development in wide areas of the ocean.

The department, which boasts a 3000-square-metre laboratory area, strives for excellence in the areas of education, research and training programs while supporting developmental efforts within various marine industries.

Energy Economics And Policy

Similar to many other branches of applied economics, energy economics emerged with therealization that ā€œenergyā€ is a scarce resource. This course covers the economic principles that guide energy related behavior of both the producers and the consumers of energy and the policy regime that has emerged to govern it. The course has four building blocks: understanding energy as a scarce resource, various aspects of energy demand and supply with a focus to policies that are in place to promote renewable energy supply and finally, a much needed discussion on interaction between energy, environment and climate change. The course aims at broadening the vision of students while making any energy related decision as a technology developer, energy manager, entrepreneur, policy maker, researcher in future or simply for personal energy use in day to day activities

Climate-Resilient, Energy Secure and Healthy Built Environments (CREST)ā€‹

The course titled ā€œClimate-resilient, energy secure and heathy built environments (CREST)ā€ is being realized through the Going Global Partnerships Collaborative Grant offered by the British Council. CREST responds to an urgent need to train the next generation of architects and engineers in meeting the triple-challenge of a climate resilient, energy secure and healthy built environment. These designers will oversee a doubling of current global built floor space in the Global South alone during their professional lifetimes; locking in carbon, energy and indoor-health footprints for up to 6 decades, thus affecting millions of lives. We are leveraging joint UK-India expertise via Newton and UKIERI research funding to address these challenges across three scales of design: novel building materials, climate extreme resilient building design and sustainable neighbourhoods. CREST is being jointly developed by 7 institutes from India (IIT Roorkee, IIT Madras, MANIT Bhopal, SPA Delhi, SPA Bhopal, SPA Vijayawada and School of Architecture and Planning ā€“ SAP, Anna University, Chennai) and the University of Bath from UK. The following are the details of faculty members developing the course.
